I’ve had this date circled since the schedule dropped. Not just because it’s the first game back at the Fortress after the World Cup break, though that alone would’ve been enough to get me down to the stadium early. It’s who we’re playing. Atlanta United. Again. The one fixture where I stop caring about xG and expected points and all of that, and just want to watch us beat them.
Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium, and if you’re anything like me you’ve spent the last week refreshing team news and pretending you weren’t. So here’s where my head is at going into tonight, one fan to another.
We already dropped our gameday guide for Charlotte Vs Atlanta at the start of the month, so you could see where and how you can watch the game.
Where We Actually Are Right Now
Let’s be honest with ourselves before the emotion takes over. We went into the break sitting sixth in the East on 21 points, six wins, three draws, six losses across fifteen games. That’s not a title charge. It’s not a disaster either. It’s a team that’s right in the mix for a home playoff spot if we string a run together, and completely capable of sliding out of it if we don’t. According to the latest MLS table, we’re only a handful of points off fourth. That’s the reality. Tight.
The last month before the break was actually decent. We beat New England 1-0, we put three past Toronto. The only real blemish in that stretch was a 1-0 home loss to NYCFC that still annoys me. So the form’s there in flashes. What I want tonight is proof it carries over a two-month gap, because momentum is a funny thing when you’ve had eight weeks off.
Atlanta Are Limping In, and I Love It
Now the fun part. Atlanta are a mess right now. I say that with the full joy of a Charlotte fan who has watched this rivalry closely. They’ve won none of their last four and lost three straight across all competitions heading into tonight, most recently going down 1-0 to Nashville on July 18. You can read the state of them in Goal’s preview if you want the full picture, but the short version is they’re arriving in Charlotte in bad shape.
Which, I’ll be honest, makes me nervous rather than relaxed. Wounded teams in derbies are the ones that bite you. Atlanta don’t need a good season to ruin our night. They just need ninety good minutes. I’ve seen it happen. So no, I’m not walking in expecting a stroll.
The Numbers That Matter
Here’s what I love pulling out whenever an Atlanta fan gets loud. Wednesday is our tenth all-time meeting with them, and we hold a 5-4 edge in the series. The club broke this all down in their Materials of the Match piece, and a couple of things jumped out at me.
First, Dean Smith has our number against these guys. Since the Gaffer arrived we’ve gone 3-1 against Atlanta in the regular season and swept the season series in 2025, the first time either club has done that to the other. There’s something about the way Smith sets us up in this fixture. I don’t fully understand it. I just trust it.
Second, and this is the one I’ll be thinking about every time Atlanta get in behind tonight. Kristijan Kahlina. Our Croatian brick wall. He’s started seven of the eight regular season meetings between these sides and posted a 5-2 record in them, with 28 saves, two clean sheets and a 77.8 save percentage. Best marks of any keeper in the series. If it stays tight late, I want him back there and nobody else. One stat from that same breakdown stuck with me too: one team has been shut out in half of all the meetings between us. This fixture gets ugly and low-scoring. Goals are precious.
The one dent in the good vibes is the last meeting. Back in April we lost 2-0 to Atlanta in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. So there’s a revenge angle here that I don’t think our lads will have forgotten either.
What I’ll Be Watching For
A few things I’ll have my eyes on from my seat.
The rust. Two months is a long time. Whoever shakes it off in the first fifteen minutes probably wins the half. I want us on the front foot early, feeding off the crowd, not feeling our way into it.
The set pieces. Atlanta have been shipping goals during this bad run, and if there was ever a night to make a dead ball count, it’s against a defense low on confidence.
Kahlina versus their moments. They’ll get chances. They always do. It’s whether our man stands tall when they do.
The Night Itself
If you’re heading down, get there early. It’s Ashley Westwood Bobblehead night, and those go quick, first come first served. There’s a bit of a party wrapped around this one too, dollar hot dogs, five dollar beers, and Joey Chestnut is apparently making an appearance, which is a sentence I did not expect to write about a soccer match. Full rundown of the promotions is on the official tickets page. There’s even a post-match light show, weather permitting.
But honestly, none of the sideshow matters to me. What matters is that after two months of international football on the telly and no Crown to shout for, we finally get our team back, and the first thing they get to do is put Atlanta back in their place at the Fortress. Protect the fort. Send them home. That’s the whole ask tonight.
See you in there. Come on you Crown.
